Fall Refresh: Top Tips for Closet Organization

an unpacked and organized closet

As September ushers in the start of fall, it’s the perfect time to give your closet a refresh. With the change in seasons, it’s not just about swapping out summer shorts for cozy sweaters—it’s an opportunity to streamline your wardrobe and create a more organized, functional space. Closet organization is a great way to start off the season right! Here’s how you can transform your closet this fall and set yourself up for a season of style and simplicity.

1. Closet Organization 101: Sort & Clear The Clutter

Before diving into the new season, at-a-glance go through what is hung up and pull out what you won't wear again or did not wear. If your seasonal clothes are put away, take these out so you can see what you have. Lay out all your clothes from the dresser, drawers and shelves if you can. You have to assess what you have but note that unless you have help, I do not recommend taking everything out if you have a lot of clothes as it will be overwhelming and too much to get through in one sitting.

Create piles for items you want to keep, donate, or discard. Use these guiding questions to make decisions:

  • When was the last time I wore this?

  • Does it fit well and make me feel confident?

  • Is it still in good condition?

  • Does it belong in the closet? (Check out this additional article on storing bedding in the closet!)

Be honest with yourself. If something hasn’t been worn in over a year or no longer fits your style, it’s time to let it go. Consider donating gently used items to your local charity.

2. Organize by Category and Season

Once you’ve pared down your wardrobe, start organizing what remains. Arrange your clothes by category—such as tops together, bottoms together, dresses together, etc.—to make it easier to find what you need. Within each category, consider organizing by color or style.

For fall, it’s essential to make your seasonal items easily accessible. Store summer clothes in vacuum-sealed bags or clear bins to save space and keep them protected until warmer weather returns. If you have space in your closet for everything, place your fall and winter clothing in the front, so they’re within easy reach.

3. Maximize Your Closet Space

To make the most of your closet space, utilize storage solutions that keep things tidy and accessible:

  • Double Up on Hanging Rods: Install a second rod below your main rod to create additional hanging space for shorter items. If you do not want anything permanent, there are great products like this one

  • Add Shelving: Use adjustable shelves or baskets to store folded clothes, shoes, and accessories.

  • Use Slim Hangers: Opt for slim, non-slip hangers to free up space and keep your clothes in place. Another protip with hangers: if you struggle with letting go of your clothes, we recommend hanging everything backwards and then turning the normal way once you've worn the item. At the end of the season, you will clearly see what you have not worn.

"I cannot begin to say enough about how wonderful this team is!! They did a phenomenal job getting thru all my things and we successfully donated a lot! They beautifully organized the remaining items. The team was a delight to be around and I am already planning their next project"

4. Accessorize Your Organization

Incorporate accessories like drawer dividers, belt racks, and hanging organizers to keep smaller items in order. Use clear bins for shoes and accessories so you can easily see and access what you have. Labeling bins and shelves can also help maintain organization.

5. Maintain Your Organized Closet

Maintaining an organized closet is key to long-term success. Make it a habit to regularly review and declutter your wardrobe. Set a seasonal reminder to reassess your clothing and storage solutions to ensure everything stays neat and functional. Or better yet, call us to help!
