Garage Organizing for Maximum Efficiency

Your garage should be a functional space, not a cluttered storage unit. If you're tired of digging through piles of tools, sports equipment, and holiday decorations, it's time for a garage overhaul. Follow this step-by-step guide to reclaim your space and keep it organized for good with effective garage organizing techniques.

An organized garage

Step 1: Clear Everything Out by Section

While the best way to start garage organizing is to empty it out completely, I would not do this without help! As a Professional Organizing team at Decluttered™, this is how we approach it, but we do not recommend this to our clients if they have a lot of clutter. This can be overwhelming for 1-2 people trying to do this in one day.

Instead I recommend taking one section of the garage and going through each item one-by-one. The advantage of having the team is that you can see everything holistically, but as an individual it will be less overwhelming to touch each item and make decisions on those items.

Step 2: Sort and Categorize

Once you start going through everything, create four piles within the garage:

  • Keep – Items you use regularly and truly need.

  • Donate – Items in good condition that you no longer use.

  • Sell – Valuable items that could bring in extra cash (Tip: do not get hung up on making money on items that do not have high value, as this will delay you from having a clutter-free garage!)

  • Trash – Broken, expired, or unusable items that need to be discarded.

Be ruthless during this process. If you haven’t used it in the last year, it’s probably time to let it go. As expert organizers, we do hear you when you say “but one day I may need this for…” but unless you can name the one day exactly, we always advise to let it go. It's costing you in taking up space both physically and mentally versus replacing the item later if and when you actually need it. Garage organization starts with minimizing unnecessary clutter.

Step 3: Maximize Storage Solutions

Once you've cleared out the clutter, it's time to create an efficient storage system. Consider these garage storage solutions:

  • Wall-mounted shelving – Keeps items off the floor and easily accessible.

  • Pegboards – Perfect for hanging tools, gardening supplies, and small equipment.

  • Overhead storage racks – Great for seasonal decorations and rarely used items.

  • Clear bins with labels – Helps you quickly find what you need while keeping your garage organized.

Step 4: Create Functional Zones

Garage organizing is more effective when you create specific zones. Suggested zones include:

  • Tools & hardware – Store small parts in labeled containers.

  • Sports & recreation – Use bins or racks for balls, bikes, and gear.

  • Seasonal & holiday storage – Place in high or less-accessible areas.

  • Automotive supplies – Group oils, cleaners, and car accessories together.

  • Projects – If you are someone that has many house projects, find a space to pull all of them together so that they do not get lost or forgotten!

  • Other – depending on where you live, you may have shoes and other household items in the garage. Make sure you store them accordingly.

When creating your zones, think about how often you access your items and where to place these based on what would be easiest. Also, consider the size of your vehicles and where you park them as well so that your newly organized garage does not impact your ease of getting in and out of the garage.

Step 5: Maintain Your Organized Garage

To keep your garage clutter-free, implement these garage organization habits:

  • Put items back in their designated spots immediately after use.

  • Do a quick monthly check to remove unnecessary items. If you use your garage more during the summer months, check bi-monthly so that any clutter does not add up quickly where it becomes overwhelming again.

  • Conduct a seasonal purge to clear out things you no longer need.
